Music Business

Creative Commons

I think to begin with i will use one of the creative commons licenses to protect my work, i think this is the best option because it is free, which is obviously a huge advantage when obtaining capital as a student is a problem.

The creative commons license i would use would be the 'Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 2.0 UK: England & Wales License'

This will allow me to protect my work from being used for commercial purposes but will allow my work to be remixed and covered by others as long as i get full attribution.

PRS

I also plan to join PRS, this will give me protection an revenue if i manage to get any airtime for any of my songs on radios or Spotify or other such platforms of broadcast.

Live Performance

After careful research into the process of getting my set live it has become apparent that it would only be practical to play with a full live band, including a drummer, a bassist, a guitarist, a keyboard synth player, percussionist and a brass player after gaining some form of capital, or finding a venue with a high rate of profitable gigs. Or unless i could find fellow musicians who could just play for experience and play as a favour which i could then return. Otherwise the musicians fees would be putting me at a great loss each gig.
This summer i intend to get in touch with several local festivals and smaller venues across south Wales to find gigs and live performance opportunity's. In particular the Brecon Jazz festival, as i have contacts there and that is a festival which would suit my music well. I also plan to send my music off to as many local radio stations as possible, and possibly to Gilles Peterson on his BBC radio 1 show, as it was his show that basically started the acid jazz genre.
In the mean time when performing live, to keep overheads to a minimum, i intend to perform with only certain parts live, the rest being played on a backing track. This also requires less organisation and reduces transportation costs.

Networking

Recently i have also created a professional profile for myself on all the major social networking sites, including:

Myspace; www.myspace.com/projectd11
YouTube: www.youtube.com/dproject11
Twitter: www.twitter.com/ProjectDmusic
Soundcloud: www.soundcloud.com/projectdmusic
Flickr: www.flickr.com/photos/projectdmusic

I am currently finishing a professional facebook account as well, seen as this seems to be the most widely used social network at the moment.

Social networking sites will be a major player in publicising my work and artists persona, they are widely available to everyone on a global level, not just the UK,. Many of them allow me to publish my work online for all to hear for free, i also have the option to promote my artist website through them and in turn actually set up an online base for selling my work, and they are all free to join and use which make them highly effective for my work.
